On Saturday the 18th July 2020, some angry mob set ablaze a Dangote truck who was said to have killed a motorcyclist and injured 3-others who were rushed to a near by hospital for treatment with immediate effect.
The incident occured at around early hours of Saturday morning 8am along the old Ibadan roundabout road, Ago-Iwoye, in the Ijebu-North Local Government area of Ogun State.
The accident was between a motorcycle and Dangote truck.
Babatunde Akinbiyi who’s the Public Relations Officer of the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps made the confirmation of the incident.
Babatunde stated that it happened as a result of over speeding by the truck driver. He also said the dangote truck driver has lost control and ran over a moving motorcycle which killed the rider and three others sustained injuries.
Amidst the incident, an angry mob took laws into his hands by setting the truck ablaze while the driver was said to have been beaten up to pulp.
Officers of TRACE rescued the driver while the Federal Road Safety Corps, the police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
Babatunde, in a statement, said that the Dangote truck driver was coming from Ago-Iwoye inward Ijebu-Ode when the incident occured.
He stated that “The driver, due to overspeeding could not control the vehicle as it approached Ibadan roundabout and collided with a motorcycle rider who was trying to divert the roundabout at the time.
“The driver of the Dangote truck was later apprehended after making attempts to run away and was beaten to a pulp by the angry mob who set the truck on fire.
“But for the intervention of men of TRACE, police, NSCDC and the FRSC, the driver would have been murdered and the truck would have been completely burnt to ash.
The driver and the motor boy have both been arrested and taken to Igbeba Motor Traffic Division, Ijebu-Ode”
He advised motorists to strictly maintain their vehicles and avoid driving at high speed especially when geeting close to a sharp corner or junction.
