The Elder Statesman, Former Governor of Sokoto state, Dr.Garba Namada, Departed this stage of existence on Monday May 4th,2020’s night in his residence in Sokoto Metropolis. His burial arrangements are yet to be made as he died at the age of 82 (From 1938-2020).
This report was gotten from a family source,who confirmed the departure of Dr. Garba. The former governor, died,after a protracted illness on Monday night. Late Garba Namada was described as a quiet,principled conservative politician,he was a fierce rival of Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau,of the National Party of Nigeria(NPN) nomination for the position of Sokoto Deputy Governor in 1979.
He was elected the deputy Governor of Sokoto state in the 1979 and became Governor in 1981. He was the second civilian Governor of Sokoto state, Nigeria,in the short-lived Nigerian Second republic,who served for just a year from 1982-1983.
He left office after a coup in 1983 in which General Muhammadu Buhari took over, he was preceeded by Shehu kangiwa who died in a Polo accident and afterwards succeeded by Garba Duba. Dr.Garba Namada Obtained a PhD in History in 1977 from Ahmadu Bella university Zaria. Sokoto state received a N96 million loan from the World Bank in July 1982.
The Federal Government provided N400,000 to splits state to use it to reduce gully erosion in December 1982.
Garba Namada described the amount of money as, little or insufficient to harness the problem. During His tenure,on March 8 1993,he commissioned a new transmitter for the Nigeria Television Authority(NTA)in Gusau.
He also established the Federal Polytechnic Kaura-Namoda during his tenure. He was a Member of the Nigeria Political reform council,he then later became a member of the People’s Democratic Party(PDP).
He became a director of Societe Generale Bank. He was the deputy National Secretary of a committee which review recommendations for resolving internal differences in the PDP.
