Lion owned by West Mathewson who is 69-year old, a South African Conservationist who was attacked without warnings by his white lionesses on Wednesday while taking a walk with them in his family-owned Lion Tree Top Lodge in South Africa.
West Mathewson is a conservationist who was murdered by his hand-reared white lionesses his family reported.
On Wednesday while West was walking two of his lionesses, one of the animals attacked and killed him without any warning.
This happened on the premises of the family-owned Lion Tree Top Lodge in South Africa’s northern Limpopo province.
West Mathewson is popularly called “Uncle West”, he nurtured the lions since they were cubs and was used to interacting with them.
West’s Wife Gill who’s 65 was driving behind her husband when the lion attacked aggressively.
“She tried her best to rescue her husband from the lion by distractions but was unable to do so. ” reported a statement by family.
After the incident, the lions have been temporarily moved to a facility while a decision on their final destination is made.
The family said the lions would be “released into the best environment available to them.”
Late West Mathewson is survived by a wife, four sons and six grand-children.
“All family members of West are heart broken by the loss of their husband, father and grandfather,” the statement added.
“They find comfort and peace with the fact that he died while living his dream, being in nature and with his lions that were so close to his heart.”
