Blackout Tuesday: Nigerian Senate To Impose Harder Punishments On Rapists

Blackout TuesdayBlackout Tuesday! Due to the incessant cases of rape bedeviling the country, the Nigerian Senate have on Tuesday asked the relevant authorities to ensure stringent discipline for rapists in the country.
This decision was taken by the red chamber after  a motion on the up swing in the number of rape cases in Nigeria by Senator Sandy Onu Healthforbes Media reporting.
Senator Onu drew the attention of his honorable colleagues to the recent rape and killing of the late Miss Vera Omozuwa and other reported cases across the country.
The rape and murder of miss Vera, which took place in a church in Benin, Edo State capital,the previous week, had sparked outrage across Nigeria.
The 22-year old late Vera Omozuwa,a microbiology student, had utilised the quietness of her empty church in Benin to study.

Some hooligans shortly after she settled down to start reading,intruded into the church, raped, and killed her.
The Senate solemnly condemned the act and orders the security agencies to apprehend the culprits and call them to book.
The lawmakers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria also asked the security agencies to enforce the Child Rights Act as it affects the girl-child marriage.
They also sought harder penalty for rapists in the country.
The Senators equally suggested to the Federal Government to organize awareness programs against rape in the country.
Among other rape cases,a 6-month old child was raped by her mother’s friend in Kano state which the First Lady of Nigeria, Hajiya.Aisha Buhari visited the infant victim and had promised to follow the case and no stone should be left unturned,last month,another case of a 7-month old baby girl was raped by her father in law in Katsina state.
